Dosen Arsitektur ITN Malang Menangkan Dua Kategori Research Poster Competition di University of Sheffield, Inggris

Malang, ITN.AC.ID – M. Nelza Mulki Iqbal, ST., M.Sc., dosen Program Studi Arsitektur S-1, Institut Teknologi Nasional Malang (ITN Malang), meraih penghargaan “Best Research Idea Year 1” dan “Researchers’ Choice” dalam Kompetisi Poster Penelitian Sheffield School of Architecture 2023 di University of Sheffield, Inggris, pada Mei 2023 lalu. Prestasi tersebut diraih oleh Nelza setelah mempresentasikan risetnya yang berjudul Decentring Community-Based Architecture Education: A Critical Pedagogy Analysis in Indonesian Context.

Nelza merupakan salah satu LPDP Awardee Kemendikbud RI, yang saat ini sedang menjalani program doktoral di Sheffield School of Architecture (SSoA), Inggris sejak Oktober 2022. Pada tahun pertama kuliahnya, ia berhasil mencatatkan prestasi sebagai ide penelitian terbaik doctoral tahun pertama dan penelitian pilihan para peneliti dalam kompetisi poster ilmiah tahunan SSoA, mengungguli puluhan mahasiswa dari berbagai negara.

Menurut Nelza, tujuan kompetisi tersebut adalah untuk mempersiapkan dan melatih para peneliti pascasarjana serta peneliti karir awal agar dapat terhubung, dan berkomunikasi secara efektif dengan peneliti lain terutama di luar tim supervisor. Menurutnya, kemampuan komunikasi merupakan keterampilan penting yang dapat dikembangkan melalui partisipasi dalam kegiatan ekstrakurikuler seperti konferensi, kompetisi, dan networking.

“Diseminasi riset dapat dilakukan dalam berbagai bentuk, termasuk poster ilmiah. Namun, menyampaikan penelitian melalui poster tentu memiliki tantangan tersendiri, terutama dalam bidang arsitektur di mana aspek visual menjadi salah satu aspek utama,” ujar Nelza.

Acara tersebut diselenggarakan secara hibrida dengan kombinasi presentasi tatap muka dan online. Setiap peserta diberikan waktu maksimal 3 menit untuk mempresentasikan proyek penelitiannya. Semua poster yang dikirimkan, baik oleh peserta yang hadir secara langsung maupun online, dipamerkan di Gedung Kuliah utama SSoA, Arts Tower.

Nelza mendapatkan penghargaan dalam kategori “Researchers Choice” (pilihan para peneliti) dan “Best Research Idea Year 1”. Poster yang dibuatnya mencakup latar belakang dan posisi Nelza terkait proyek arsitektur berbasis komunitas yang dimulai saat ia menyelesaikan studi magister di Inggris, pengalaman kerja dengan NGO Arsitektur dalam konteks permukiman informal di Jakarta, serta penggunaan Riset Grant MBKM untuk melakukan penelitian bersama masyarakat desa dengan mahasiswa Arsitektur, dan Perencanaan Wilayah dan Kota (PWK) dari ITN Malang. Selain itu, poster juga memuat tinjauan literatur awal terkait diskursus pedagogi pendidikan arsitektur berbasis masyarakat dan kerangka filosofi yang digunakan dalam penelitian doktoralnya.

“Nyaris tak dapat dipercaya bisa mendapatkan apresiasi dari kampus, di mana juri-jurinya tidak hanya dosen-dosen senior, tetapi juga kepala departemen yang merupakan professor berpengaruh di Inggris. Ketika kami berjabat tangan, beliau mengatakan, ‘Kami belum pernah bertemu sebelumnya, tetapi sekarang kami mengenal Anda, dan akan melihat Anda berkembang dalam beberapa tahun ke depan.’ Tentu saja, hal ini menjadi motivasi bagi saya untuk memberikan yang terbaik di tahun-tahun mendatang,” ungkap Nelza dengan semangat.

Sebagai pemenang, Nelza menerima hadiah berupa uang tunai sebesar £250 dan voucher belanja Amazon senilai £100. Para pemenang juga akan menerima sertifikat penghargaan dan apresiasi dari penyelenggara.
